Fish River Canyon

July 2017

The rock walls rise up out of the ground and watch over you constantly as you wander down river from Hobas to Ai-Ais, Namibia. From the moment you drop down into the canyon all perspective of time and place is lost, there is something so magical and primal in the simplicity of traveling by foot, using your own two legs as tools too adventure. The route follows no set trail, only the footprints in the heavy sand from those who came before you. There are no markers or huts, no signboards or little yellow painted foot prints to follow. The only indication of progress is the mileage markers painted on the rocks alongside the river, every 10km. We took the longest time our permit allowed, why wouldn't you? Six days in the canyon, with 90km of trekking to cover.

On route to the canyon we experience the tough desert dirt roads! Rear tyre slashed to shreds, it proved to be a burden for the rest of the trip, as we crawled along to the start of the hike and then halfway back home.

The descent into the canyon is tough on the knees and the heavy packs mean you have to concentrate hard on the technical sections!

We swam as often as we could, the water was icy and very welcome after a long days hike in the heat.
